The vineyards

are located within a radius of eight kilometres around the Winery, covering 35 hectares in three vineyards. The soils are mainly calciferous sedimentary rock with a high amount of sand. The annual average of precipitation is 400-450mm, which is the bottom line for vines. Against this backdrop, a main focus of our work is to improve the soil and build humus.

Our primary grapes are classic varietals, like Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Zweigelt, and also Pinot Noir. Moreover, we are engaged in varieties which have been well known in other parts of this world, but which are newcomers in our region: In 1995, we planted the French grapes Syrah and Viognier for the first time.

Steinbügel vineyard

Steinbügel, our best vineyard right next to the Winery, is located on a south-facing slope with permeable clayey primary sand soil of marine origin with a high amount of lime. Being exposed to the sun, arid heat develops during the day, while chilly continental air brings freshness at night which results in great differences between the day and night temperatures. This, in turn, leads to the fresh, crisp acidity and a distinctive variety of aromas in the grapes. In the airy location, the grapes stay healthy in autumn and can ripen for a long time on the vines without being rot-infected. The long-lasting wines from this specific vineyard thus perfectly reflect the archetype of vintage and varietal.

Organic cultivation

All vineyards of the Winery are operated organically, supplemented by biodynamic and homoeopathic preparations. This improves the quality of the soils, making the vines more resistant whilst steadily increasing biodiversity at the same time.

In the vineyards, wild herbs and legumes like clover grow to absorb nitrogen from the air and feed it naturally to the vines. At the same time, this leads to a most diverse microfauna with an excellent mineralising effect.

This green cover avoids soil erosion and promotes the building of humus and biodiversity. Moreover, it helps to store water and improve soil texture and composition. It also improves grape quality as this type of cultivation reduces yield naturally and prevents the infection of the vines with soil-borne fungi. For crop protection, we deliberately support positive conditions for useful animals like mites and ladybirds to consciously use them for pest control.

For the spreading of biodynamic and homeopathic preparations (500 and 501) and teas made from nettle, chamomile, horsetail and valerian, we use a lightweight quad.
